Since the mid-1990s, the Brazilian State has been undergoing a neoliberal counterreformation process, imprinting the logic of the new state managerialism in social institutions and policies. The rationality of the counter-reform in health
policy becomes hegemonic within the Unified Health System (SUS), impacting social practices in health, among them Social Work. The present article intends to discuss the main tendencies of the Brazilian Social Work in the context of the health counter-reform and, particularly, its impacts with social workers who work in social organizations and university hospitals. As a methodology, we carried out a literature review on the subject, secondary data collection and interviews with 50 social workers who work in public health in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Our conclusions show an intense process of precariousness of work and social practices in university hospitals, as well as in social organizations.
