The so-called “refugee crisis” triggered a media rush to the borders. Through the perspective of the media, images of the events are disseminated and result in the construction of a representation of the “refugee”. The representative tendency of
this phenomenon is based on a monocular perspective, which influences collective opinion, emphasizing the relationship between the ‘I’ and the ‘other’. A first person takes photographs for a second person about a third person. In this sense,
the monocular perspective calls to the discussion Michel Foucault’s panoptic view; the third person, the “refugee”, is seen without seeing, without having the opportunity to “defend” the representation attributed to them. As a consequence, the constant reproduction of images makes the phenomenon universal in the eyes of those who see the images. In this paper I intend to approach the representation of the subject “refugees”. For this I turn to content analysis of the images, as well as discourse analysis.
