Abstract

Nowadays, organizations are looking for people with developed technical skills and soft skills. In turn, professionals have a more active attitude towards themselves and feel responsible for building their careers and developing skills that guarantee their employability. There is a relationship, however, between these two points of view that can be moderated by the expectations that individuals have about professional success. This study analyzes the moderating effect of career outcome expectations on the relationship between soft skills and career development. The
study uses a quantitative hypothetical-deductive methodology operationalized by a questionnaire. Data were collected from one hundred Portuguese university students of Human Resource Management. The results showed that personal relationships and external outcome expectations are the skills with the greatest influence on career development. In view of these results, it is recommended that organizations think about the personal and professional progress of their employees.
