Abstract

Neoliberal austerity policies impact public services. In this context, research activity within professional practice is presented as an expendable and costly activity of resources. This text recollects a social work experience carried out in a federal
public health unit, a reference for maternal and child health, at a federal capital in Brazil. We sought to think of a vocational training strategy that incorporated research as an integral part of professional work. Experience of research since
the initial stages of professional training (internship and residence) contributes to an incorporation of the intervention based on research of the actual needs of the users and enables a professional action that goes beyond the here and now
of the issues presented, thus contributing to critical action.
